Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT HAPPENS ON THE DAYS WHEN THERE IS EXTREME WEATHER (FREEZING, HEAVY RAINS, EXTREME WINDS, THUNDER AND LIGHTENING, ETC)

This is the most frequently asked question, by far! We are advocating that there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothes. With that said, there are conditions that are not safe for a child to play in. On those days, there will be respite available from the weather for a period of our play day. If weather conditions are not safe, we will make adaptations, or rarely, cancel the session for the day.

We would also like to take the opportunity to help parents keep in mind that children love to play, and many, have few concerns about what the weather conditions are. We ask that parents trust our judgement that we read and anticipate your child’s needs and comforts. This is a new idea for our community and we understand that. When a family chooses Sincerity, we want everyone to feel proud and excited, so we will work with every family to ensure that their needs are met and their concerns are heard!

ARE THERE MAKE UP DAYS FOR CANCELLATION DUE TO EXTREME WEATHER?

As of September 2015, Sincerity is unable to offer any make up days for cancelled classes.

MY CHILD GETS COLD EASILY. HOW CAN MY CHILD KEEP WARM?

Having the proper outdoor gear is crucial in keeping any person comfortable, especially with our wet West Coast weather!  It is expected that parents prepare their child in weather appropriate clothing. Toques and lined boots will go along way with insulating their child. That, paired with Oakiwear rain gear and water proof gloves, it is our priority to continuously monitor to make sure everyone is happy, comfortable and having fun! We also offer a warm lunch, hot water on demand, as well as a heated area to do some quieter activities.

IS SINCERITY A DAYCARE? OR PRESCHOOL? WHAT IS A "PLAY GROUP"?

Sincerity uses a preschool model to structure its basic curriculum and public expectations. Sincerity Outdoor Play Group is 100% a program that parents can rely on to offer their children time to learn, be educated, to grow and blossom for preperation into Kindergarten and life beyond a classroom. We offer EVERYTHING a typical preschool offers and much more!

For us, a daycare is a place where children go for a full day because of working/student parents, or because a full day is required. Sincerity is not full days. We operate from 9-1pm. Legally, we can not call ourselves a "preschool" because the current regulations require an enclosed building to be licensed. That is why we had to change our name from Sincerity Outdoor PLAY SCHOOL, to PLAY GROUP.

WHAT IS REGGIO EMILIA CURRICULUM?

In short, it is an educational philosophy that focuses on teaching a child, or group of children, on a subject they are interested in for that day/week/month. In a traditional preschool, there are usually “units” (i.e. Dinosaurs, spring, colours, etc). A Reggio inspired philosophy preschool will grow the day’s education based on what the children are focused on that day. This type of program requires a lot of documentation in various forms (photos, adult scriptures, children illustrations to plan their ideas, etc), a lot of impromptu activities (arts, discovery areas, group work), and note taking so that the play can be expanded on. It’s the teacher’s job to take the children’s lead and to help the ideas and curiosities flow over the rim of traditional and into magical! The learning happens as a result of the enriched play!

WHAT IS THE CHILD STAFF RATIO?

There will be a child staff ratio of 8 children to 1 adult. We are also looking into having students from North Island College’s Early Childhood Care and Education program participate with the play school.

WHAT ARE THE QUALIFICATIONS OF STAFF?

All staff will be qualified ECE persons, with up to date Criminal Record checks, doctor’s notes saying they are of able body and mind to work with children, and current First Aid.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN MY CHILD IS SICK?

We have a sick policy. It is asked that if your child does not have enough energy to keep up with the routine of the program, green runny nose, communicable condition (pink eye, Hand Foot and Mouth,  head lice, influenza, unexplained rash, etc), throwing up or diarrhea it is required they do not attend until they no longer show symptoms. If a child becomes ill while in attendance, a parent, guardian, or prearranged alternative pick up person will be contacted.

DOES MY CHILD HAVE TO BE OUT OF DIAPERS?

NO way!!!!! We at Sincerity appreciate all the stages a child is at. The pressure to get out of diapers and into underwear can be so stressful. A social pressure we want to take off parents and children!!!! We do ask, if your child is in diapers that parents supply a week’s worth of diapers, wipes and creams. If you are using cloth diapers, we will arrange a daily exchange.

WHERE TO DO THEY GO TO THE BATHROOM?

We have a 2 piece bathroom, with flushing toilet, running hot water and privacy. There is a diaper changing station as well as stools and adapted toilet seat for all stages of learning to be independent with bathrooming needs :)

ARE SNACKS INCLUDED?

Yes! We will offer fresh, in session, fruit in the morning for children to come and eat as they would like. It will be reminded that there is snack if they forget or get distracted with play. At 11:30am, everyone will stop their play to gather for a hot lunch option that will be filled with nutritious, whole grains, and from all 4 food groups. Whenever possible, we will offer local or organic foods with snack and lunch.

MY CHILD HAS A FOOD SENSITIVITY/ALLERGY.

We will work with every family to try to meet the needs of the child and the degree of their child’s situation.

WHEN ARE YOU OPEN?

Sincerity has untraditional hours of operation. We open at 9:00am. Sincerity has a 4hr play day. Other preschools only operate for 2.5 hrs. We felt an extension of our play day was necessary for both children and educators. Also, parents can benefit from having a longer block of time between drop off and pick up. With more hours, we feel we can really get involved in ideas and discoveries! At 1-1:30pm we have a daily Open House for parents to come and see what their child has been doing in their morning, touch base with the teacher and make connections with other parents. At 1:30pm, Sincerity is closed

We run 11 months out of the year, which is also untraditional for preschool. At Sincerity, we feel July is a very educational month, from growing gardens, to nature discoveries, to extra fun water play!! We take summer holidays all of August, Christmas Break is synchronized with SD70’s, and Spring Break is the second week in May.

ARE FULL DAYS AVAILABLE?

At this time, just a half day (9-1:00pm) is being offered. However, feedback on the hours will be greatly appreciated and welcomed.

DO I HAVE TO STAY FOR THE OPEN HOUSE SECTION OF THE DAY?

No, you don’t have to stay. This time slot is designated for parents to get involved in their child’s morning and education, as well as check in with the teacher on progress, life changing events at home, etc. But let’s have a realistic expectation of one’s self.  Not everyone will be able to stay every day. Not everyone will have the same comfort level on wet, mucky outdoor play like their child. It does not label or categorize you as a good or bad parent on how often or long you stay. This is not “let’s make mom/dad feel guilty hour”. It’s simply an opportunity.
